History
Built c. 1935 as the RAF Officers' Mess for Old Sarum airfield, the imposing brick structure originally served as the social and administrative hub for military officers stationed at the base. Part of a broader airfield complex established during the First World War and extended through WWII, it was located within a site designated as a conservation area in 2007, sharing its heritage footprint with Grade II* listed hangars and wartime buildings. In the late 1990s, local developer Karl Throgmorton spearheaded the conversion of the former mess into a gated residential enclave comprising eight houses, one bungalow and seven apartment. The building was originally classified as Grade II* listed, but this was revised to Grade II status in April 2016 — reflecting its architectural value while allowing sensitive adaptation for modern housing use.
